Nailed It: Shower Curtain Art

Welcome to another edition of Nailed It! where I attempt Pinterest crafts with probably varying results. Up today is a piece of statement art made from a shower curtain!

For awhile now I've been trying to think of something that would look good on the big, empty wall in our kitchen. I considered a gallery wall but we're doing that downstairs, and I also considered framing a large vintage map of Colorado but that would have been too expensive. When one of my friends pinned the image on the right with the caption "headboard made from shower curtain," I knew I had found a winning idea.

The hardest part of this project was finding a shower curtain that I liked. Our walls are greige and our color scheme is mostly neutral (yes, I need to get a new rug for the kitchen) so anything too colorful would look out of place. I searched google, Amazon, and all of my favorite sites for hours trying to find something that would work when I remembered to check out Urban Outfitters- the place where I had gotten a shower curtain for our last apartment that I loved! And that's when I found this...

We don't have anything even sort of nautical already in our house, but I fell in love with the quote and style of the curtain. If you can't read it, it says, "Our anchors we will weigh, our sails we will set, the friends we leave behind, we will never forget." Also, it was on sale and I really didn't want to pay more than $35 for a shower curtain.

When the curtain came N and I laid it out on the floor and realized it was HUGE. So we laid it out on the floor and N measured around it, trying to see how small we could get away with making the frame. He bought the wood at Home Depot, and spent around $5.

I draped the curtain over the frame and made sure we were good to go!

Making sure the pattern was centered in the frame was the hardest part of this project. The print was a little crooked on the curtain, and I wanted to make sure it would be straight in the frame.

I worked on this while R was napping, but Hank made sure he got in on the action.

I stapled the fabric on the frame haphazardly. There was nothing beautiful or professional about it- especially on the edges. But it worked!

Now this is the point where I want to tell you everything was perfect and I just hung it on the wall. But alas, things were not to be so. When I hung it up on the wall the first time, I realized that the frame was totally crooked. N had measured everything precisely, but because the wood was so flimsy I had shifted it while pulling and stapling the fabric on. I pulled out all the staples using a screwdriver, and N went back to Home Depot and got some metal brackets (about $5 for 4) to screw onto the corners of the frame. Thankfully that fixed it and we had a perfectly square frame!

Here it is in all it's glory on the wall! N used Nails to hang it, and then screwed the bottom two corners into the wall because the unevenness of the fabric on the frame made it stick out a little bit. It's a little bit bigger than we would have preferred, but in the end we're happy with it. Our kitchen table is counter height and we are hoping to get a lower table sooner than later (hopefully a pedestal table I can refinish *sigh*.)

All in all this project cost us about $50. $40 for the curtain and shipping, and $10 for the hardware from Home Depot. I would definitely say this gives you quite a bit of bang for your buck!
