Throwback: R's First Birthday

With R's 3rd birthday coming up in about two months I've been thinking about what we're going to do for her party this year. Before I start blogging about my plans and preparations, I thought I'd share with you pictures from her first and second birthdays. We are super blessed to have a professional photographer in the family- N's sister is incredibly talented. She's taken pictures at our parties that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Here's are the pictures from R's first birthday:

We did a Colorado Avalanche theme for R's first birthday since she loved to go to Avalanche games with us. The color scheme was burgundy/ blue/ white/ silver (Avs colors) with assorted hockey stuff scattered around. We had food catered from Corner Bakery (so good) and cupcakes from Gigi's Cupcakes.

We got regular sized cupcakes from Gigi's and man, that was TOO MUCH CUPCAKE. There were so many left over and I ate so many of them. I must have gained at least 10lbs and 5 cavities. It was so bad!

I ordered chocolate "1" pops and cake pops on Etsy. The chocolate 1s weren't very good but the cake pops were delicious. I think I'm going to order some again this year but there's a lot of other stuff I'd like to get so we'll see, haha.

And the best part of the party? We hired the Avalanche mascot Bernie to come out for pictures! R loved Bernie when we'd take her to see him at Avs games (completely the opposite of me who was scared out of my mind of mascots!) and was so excited to see him at the party. A few of our friend's kids were not quite as excited, haha.

Bernie gave her a bunch of Avalanche goodies that she loved, and that we still have today!

And he loved the photo backdrop I made!

My parent's dog Jack wasn't quite sure what to think.

She didn't want to say goodbye!

When it came time for cake R wasn't quite sure about the headband I had got her off Etsy.

The cake was not pretty but because R had never had sugar in her entire life up until that point, I knew I'd make her really sick if we did a full sugar cake. I got the recipe for this cake and the frosting off some diabetes friendly website and well, it didn't turn out attractive or appetizing but you'll see what R thought of it...

"What is this?"

"Ok I'll try it."

"Ehhh I'm not sure about this..."

"Well wait a minute..."

"Ok that is good!"

(At this point I tried cutting it apart for her and she was like "GET YOUR HANDS OUT OF HERE WOMAN!")

Right to the source!

I love this picture where it looks like she was giving a thumbs up! It was just an incidental capture as she was moving her hand but it looks intentional!

She went AT that cake for awhile until N eventually was like "ok this is enough" and took it away, haha. She has been a BIG fan of cake ever since. ;)

  3. Ahhh I love this so much!! She was/is such a cutie!! The cake pictures crack me up! Good idea about finding a cake without as much sugar... I've been trying to decide how to do that for Allie's first birthday.

    1. They crack me up too. Especially now that she's older and even more of a character. It's so awesome to see that bloom in them. And yeah, I was pretty fanatical about her not having sugar before a year (I was hoping I could prevent her from becoming a sugar addict like her father and I and now I've failed MISERABLY) so I knew she'd be sick if she went full on into a cake. Everyone was like "oh they usually don't eat much of it" but that baby ate EVERYTHING (and still does) so I knew she'd demolish the entire thing!

    2. Haha aww.. Yeah, I'm in the same boat, but I'm not sure completely depriving her of sugar will do anything but make her binge on it when she's older! It's so hard to know what to do!
